The steam locomotive 52 2195 was a locomotive of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB). The series 52 was a war locomotive that was built in large numbers during World War II. The designation “52” stands for the wheel arrangement 1’E h2, which means that the locomotive had a triple-coupled driving wheel group (1’E) and a double-coupled trailing wheel (h2).
The series 52 was a so-called war locomotive, developed in Germany during World War II to meet the growing demand for locomotives for the transport of troops and goods. The locomotive was designed as a simple, robust and easy-to-produce machine.
The 52 2195 was built by Henschel & Sohn in Kassel and put into service in 1943. During the war, many locomotives of this series were also used on non-electrified lines in the east. After the end of the war, some locomotives of the series 52 remained in Germany, while many others were handed over as reparations to the victorious powers.
In the post-war period, the remaining locomotives of the series 52 were taken over by the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) and continued to be used in regular service. However, with the advent of more modern locomotives, especially diesel and electric locomotives, the demand for steam locomotives became increasingly lower. The last examples of the series 52 were taken out of service in the 1970s.
Today, some locomotives of the series 52 have been preserved as operational museum locomotives. They are used in historical vehicle events and nostalgia trips, reminding us of the time when steam locomotives shaped the image of rail transport in Germany. The 52 2195 is an important historical example that reflects the history of German railways.
